Job Title: Cataloging Librarian
Department: Access Services
Reports to: Department Head
Job Type: Part Time; Non-Exempt
ORGANIZATIONAL ROLE
Serves as a member of the Access Services Department, performing original and copy cataloging based on current standards. Ensures accuracy and quality control by advising on best practices, researching solutions, and resolving issues related to the librarys catalog and classifications.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Perform original and complex copy cataloging of the librarys collections to facilitate their identification, access, and use:
Interpret and apply RDA and AACR2R standards, classify works according to the Dewey Decimal System, and apply subject and genre headings using Library of Congress Authorities and relevant thesauri.
Download vendor-supplied MARC records for newly ordered titles and acquire bibliographic records for library collection materials from other sources, such as SkyRiver.
Edit all bibliographic records to conform to current RDA or AACR2R standards and local practices, using batch-editing software, such as MarcEdit.
Perform recataloging and reclassification of collection materials as necessary.
Identify and implement user-friendly approaches to cataloging practices, and maintain quality control of the catalog and collections to ensure a high-quality customer experience.
Collaborate with Adult Services staff in administering local and NJ history resources in the Local History collection.
Contribute to collection maintenance projects involving inventory measures, replacement of items, repair of damaged items, and weeding.
Assist in building, evaluating, and updating the disaster recovery plan for library collections.
Maintain accurate online shelf list records, cross reference files, and authority files.
Promote community awareness of the library through promotion of the collection and involvement with the librarys readers advisory staff.
Maintain constant awareness of the safety and security of staff and members of the public, taking steps to correct potential problems.
Take pride in the library, ensuring it is clean, organized, inviting, and in good repair.
Participate in professional organizations, conferences, webinars, workshops, and other continuing education opportunities in order to stay informed about trends in libraries, cataloging, publishing, information, and technology.
Prepare monthly, annual, and other reports as needed.
Accept other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited college or university.
Demonstrated expertise in library collection management and acquisitions systems.
Demonstrated expertise in traditional cataloguing standards and practices for original and complex copy cataloging
Excellent attention to detail and ability to retain precise records and statistics.
Adept at project and time management.
Excellence in critical thinking, decision-making, and problem-solving, and effective at working in a collaborative team environment and on self-directed projects.
Demonstrated written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
Excellent customer service and active listening skills, and a commitment to always providing an exemplary user experience.
Passion about public libraries and their tradition of sharing knowledge, literature, technology, and other resources.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
New Jersey residency required by the New Jersey First Act, N.J.S.A. 52:14-7 (L. 2011, Chapter 70). If you do not reside in New Jersey, you have one year after the date you take your employment to relocate your residence to New Jersey. If you do not do so, you are subject to removal from your position;
NJ State Professional Librarian Certificate;
Must be able to work evening and weekend hours as necessary;
Must be able to work with or without reasonable accommodation in a shared work area, to stand and move around for three or more hours at a time and to lift 25 pounds from varying heights.
Bilingual Spanish language skills would be helpful.
