Posting Summary



Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Director of Information Technology for Programming and Web Development to lead the Programming in the School of Arts and Sciences (SAS) IT Office. SAS serves the largest academic unit at Rutgers consisting of 750 tenure and tenure-track faculty, 20,000 students and 2000 staff covering 100 majors and minors and spread across the four New Brunswick area campuses. This position serves as part of the SAS IT Executive Team to supervise and represent both Programming groups (Administrative and Instructional) and the Web Development Office while also participating in the management of the SAS IT Office.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:


Supervises assigned full-time, part-time and student staff to foster a positive and productive work environment with a focus on staff development.
Provides high level technical management utilizing all the tools required in complex programming and web development offices and balancing resources to meet both the administrative and instructional programming needs of the school.
Manages the day to day operations of the office including the management of programming and web development projects, data management, customer outreach, budgeting, and billing.
Responsible for ensuring that related local and cloud hosted systems and sites are stable, scalable, accessible and well supported while insuring data integrity, security, consistency and reliability.
Evaluates existing commercial software packages and cloud services to determine their suitability for use in the school and, in selected cases, serving the larger university community.
Fosters communications with users and customers to gather requirements and ensure that needs are being met.
Ensures that systems and sites are designed to allow for their use across the institution.
Authors, maintains and enforces appropriate policies relating to the Programming and Web Development Offices.
Represents the office and SAS IT in meetings with the larger university, Big 10 partners and other outside entities as appropriate.

The flexible work arrangements outlined in Rutgers Policy 60.3.22 are part of a pilot program that is effective September 1, 2022 through August 31, 2023. Minimum Education and Experience


Masters degree or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
At least 6 years experience supervising developers in a large and complex academic IT environment.





Certifications/Licenses


Use of personal vehicle in order to travel for business demands; a valid drivers license would be required for this position.





Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities


Extensive knowledge of Structured Query Language (SQL) and the principles of programming, server design, support and security. Extensive knowledge of web technologies.
Experience with the use and administration of programming related tools like source version control systems, Postgres, etc.
Experience with web related technologies including a content management system like Joomla, Drupal or WordPress.
Familiarity with the linux operating system and the ability to automate processes through scripting.
Demonstrated excellent written and oral communications skills.
Excellent written and verbal communications skills and the willingness to travel periodically are required.
Ability to analyze and apply complex technical information.





Preferred Qualifications


A degree in Computer Science with a focus on programming and/or web development is preferred but not required.
Experience with virtualization technology like VMWare and modern management methodologies like Agile are strongly preferred.





Equipment Utilized


The position will be required to work with equipment including, but not limited to: Windows, PC, Linux systems, cloud environments, database systems, project management systems, content management systems, etc.





Physical Demands and Work Environment


Position will be required to travel to all RU-NB campuses regularly and other RU locations less frequently.
Occasional out of state travel will also be required.
